Injuries are the most under-recognized major public health
problem facing the nation today. They account for more years of potential life loss than
cancer and cardiovascular disease combined and cost the nation approximately $133.2
billion each year.
Every year, nonfatal injuries cause one in three of us to
seek medical attention or render us unable to perform normal activities. Titusville Fire
and Emergency Services urges you to take basic preventive measures to reduce or eliminate
the incident of injury from fires, drownings, falls, poisonings, vehicles crash and all
the other ways in which injuries occur. Follow the safety tips below and make the time to
take a CPR course, learn the Heimlich maneuver, and build your first aid skills.
Safety Tips
- Install and maintain smoke detectors in your home. If battery
operated, replace the batteries every time your change your clock for daylight savings
time. Consider retrofitting your home with residential sprinklers
- Teach your children that matches are not toys and place
matches and lighters out of reach
- Practice E.D.I.T.H (Exit Drills In The Home) with your family
- Always use seatbelts in vehicles and make sure any children
are secured in approved safety seats
- Never drive, bicycle, boat, handle power tools, use heavy
equipment, or swim while drinking alcoholic beverages
- Use proper protective equipment and appropriate clothing when
bicycling, walking, or participating in sport activities
- Check your home for safety hazards, including loose rugs,
frayed electrical cords, faulty electrical equipment, cleansers and pesticides within
reach of children, firearms, non-locking cabinets, etc.
- Never leave children unattended in or around water, including
bathtubs, pools, mop buckets, toilets, streams, lakes, etc.
- Check heating equipment carefully before using
- Don't leave fireplaces, candles, cooking areas, open flames
unattended
- Check the directions on all insecticides and cleaning
compounds. Don't mix any compounds.
- Pay close attention to weather advisories and take appropriate
actions when indicated by emergency authorities
