Mission Statement

The mission of the Solid Waste Division is to provide the Citizens of Titusville with an affordable refuse and recycling collection service that disposes of residential and commercial solid waste in a sanitary, timely and convenient manner.

Responsibilities

The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the collection and removal of garbage and recycling items within the city limits of Titusville. Our services include twice a week household garbage pickup, once a week curbside recycling pickup, bulky item (junk) pickup every other week on Wednesday and yard waste pickup.

Residential garbage collection is provided twice a week, either Monday & Thursday or Tuesday & Friday.

Commercial garbage collection (dumpsters) is set up by the customer and varies according to size of the container and pickup days. However, pickup days are available Monday through Saturday for this service.

Residential bulky item (junk pickup is conducted every other week on Wednesdays with Harrison Street Serving as the collection route dividing line (i.e., one Wednesday items are collected North of Harrison Street and the next Wednesday items are collected South of Harrison Street). Residents can schedule bulky item pickup by calling 383-5755. A phone call is not required for junk pickup since trucks automatically cover the areas on alternate Wednesdays. However, it is necessary to call the Solid Waste Division if you have a metal item (appliances, pipes, lawn mowers, BBQ grills, etc.) or wood items (pallets, fencing, landscape logs, etc.). It is recommended that residents place their refuse on the curb no earlier than 5:00 p.m. the evening before or no later that 6:30 a.m. on the morning of scheduled pickup. If an owner wishes for the City to dispose of large amounts of junk or yard debris exceeding the capacity of the waste collection vehicles, a fee for such disposal shall be charged.

The following items are collected in the curbside recycling program:

  • Newspapers
  • Aluminum cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic containers coded #1 (PETE) or #2 (HDPE).

April 1, 2004, the City's recycling program added yet another item for recycling. Under a new program, entitled, "Take it to the Curb, Brevard! Recycle", steel or metal cans are now included among the items residents can place in their blue bins for curbside pickup in the City limits of Titusville or in the multi-family bins locted at most aprtment complexes and condos.

Metal/steel cans werepreviously thrown into the regular household garbage and then separated when the trash reached the landfill in Cocoa. The metal cans are now collected as part of the City's recycling program and are transported to a local recycler in Cocoa who separates the cans at the facility. The items are then shipped directly to markets where they will be recycled into new metal items thereby saving precious resources, energy and dollars.

Metal/steel cans include coffee cans, vegetable cans, soup cans, juice cans, etc. "The intent of adding metal/steel cans to the recycling program is to encourage more recycling and also make it convenient for the residents," states Hillary Arena, Solid Waste Superintendent.

The addition of metal/steel cans follows the addition in January 2004 of all plastic bottles (#1 thru #7) "with a neck". All plastic bottles or jars classified as having a "neck" - a bottle or jar with an opening that is smaller than the base or widest part of the bottle or jar - can now be included for recycling. These bottles include soda, milk, juice, and water bottles; household cleaners & detergents; shampoos, conditioners, mouthwash & lotions; and laundry detergent, bleach and fabric softener bottles. Please remove all the lids and pumps from these containers and place them in with the regular household trash since they are not recyclable.

As with all recyclable items, please do not place items in the bins which do have or previously contained hazardous, toxic, chemical or explosive ingredients. If unsure whether a container or its contents is recyclable or how to properly dispose of the materials, please contact the Solid Waste Division at 383-5755. Residents may also request new recycling bins to replace damaged or stolen bins by calling the Solid Waste Division.

Service Fee - The Solid Waste Division operates as an enterprise fund. This means service costs, like collection, are paid by monthly garbage/recycling fees which are included on the monthly utility bill.

Special Notes - Once again, all items to be picked up by the City must be placed at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on the day of pickup.

  • Containers must be provided by the owner and no container shall be larger than 32-gallon capacity and must have suitable handles and lids.
  • Containers must weight 50 pounds or less when filled; large and overweight containers will not be emptied.
  • Please do not use plastic or paper bags (even if the bag is bio-degradable) for yard trash. Yard trash is mulched and the bags are not acceptable.

Our hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. We can be contacted at 383-5755.
