| Solid Waste Division
Employee Provides Over 30 Years Of Loyal Service In 1971, the Solid Waste Division had nine garbage routes and consisted of 26 employees. "Scout trucks," that held the trash barrels, were utilized by the collectors to collect the garbage from resident's back doors. In those days, the trucks had no radios so the crews waited until a front-end loader truck came to empty the trailers. Slowly, equipment improvements were made and rear loaders came onto the scene making curbside collection possible in the middle 70s. One thing that wasn't forgotten, however, was the service solid waste employees provided. Today, that service has become one of the most liked and well-received services the City of Titusville offers. |

| For over 30 years, Johnny Hester, Solid Waste
Foreman, has been serving the residents of the City of Titusville. Johnny started
to work at age 20 for the city's Solid Waste Division in August 1971. He started as a
Refuse Collector in the then Sanitation Department making an annual salary of $4,100. He
worked hard and learned everything taught to him. He worked his way up from the bottom of
the division where he gradually acquired the knowledge to operate the various types of
equipment and vehicles the Solid Waste Division had. His customer service skills, job
knowledge and abilities, and accident free driving record enabled him to be promoted in
1995 to his current position as a Foreman in the Solid Waste Division. He has held that
position for more than seven years and continues to serve the community. His current job requires supervision of anywhere from 13-26 employees who pick up dumpsters, remove yard trash, garbage and recycling. His job requires a constant knowledge of collection services and schedules. He recognizes the importance of providing the best possible service to our citizens and knows many of them by name. His smile is frequently seen by many of our citizens as he waves from the white pickup truck touring neighborhoods looking for ways to improve the service. He constantly initiates new ideas to provide more timely collection schedules and more efficient routes. His vast knowledge, superior customer service skills and perfect attendance record (for ten years straight) earned him the Nuts & Bolts Award at the City's annual service awards day in February 2001. The City employee with the most longevity, Johnny is truly a loyal City employee. Johnny, who lives in Titusville, has been married to his wife Rosaline for twenty-five years and has two sons and a daughter and six grandchildren. Thank you Johnny Hester for your services to the City of Titusville. |
