Florida Walking Tour The story of Historic Titusville is told on descriptive panels located along public walkways. Each panel reveals a specific historic site and features period images. Welcome to Historic Titusville, the oldest community on the Indian River. This tour will be our guide on a stroll that will take you back to the 1800s, when residents and visitors traveled by horse and buggy, by sailing vessels, and by steamboats. |
| In the 1850s, only a few hardy pioneers resided
in this vicinity. During the Civil War, salt was produced here to aid the Confederate
cause, and daring sea captains landed their vessels after eluding the Federal blockage
along the Southern coastline. Soon afterward, settlers like Col. Henry Titus began to
arrive, full of dreams and seeing opportunity everywhere they looked. On this tour, you will rediscover the Titusville of yesteryear, from its modest beginnings as a frontier settlement called Sand Point, to the bustling commerce and growth brought by the JT&KW railroad, the Indian River steamboats, and early industries like commercial fishing and citrus agriculture. Along the way, you will meet some of our enterprising pioneers. You will see how Titusville and its people worked to develop the Indian River region and pioneer the new frontier of space. |
